Meta's New WhatsApp Account Structure: What Changes

Meta split WhatsApp Business accounts from messaging accounts in Sep–Oct 2026. Your Whatsable setup keeps working. Here's what changed and why.

Meta changed how WhatsApp Business Platform accounts work. Between September 23 and October 15, 2026, every account automatically moved to a new setup that separates your phone number from your billing and templates. Your Whatsable setup keeps working.

Meta describes the change in "Updates to Account Structure on WhatsApp Business Platform": "Now, a WhatsApp Business account manages phone numbers and can support multiple integrations at the same time, while a new messaging account manages the payment method and templates."

Meta says: "All accounts on WhatsApp Business Platform will transition to the new structure automatically between September 23 and October 15, 2026. All WhatsApp campaigns will continue to work as they do today. No action is required from businesses or solution providers."

What changes

Before, a WhatsApp Business account bundled your phone number, templates, and billing together. You could share that account with only one solution provider at a time.

Under the new structure:

  • WhatsApp Business accounts manage phone numbers. You own them and can share them at the same time with multiple solution providers, agencies, direct integrations, and Meta solutions like Inbox.
  • Messaging accounts manage payment methods and templates. Meta creates these automatically when you connect a provider through embedded signup. Each messaging account holds one payment method. You only need a messaging account for business-initiated template messages or billing.

In a September 22, 2026 entry, Meta's developer changelog says Coexistence onboarding now converts your existing WhatsApp Business account into a backward-compatible messaging account that keeps its existing ID.

One number with more than one provider

Meta now lets one WhatsApp number work with more than one provider, and with Meta's own tools, under one WhatsApp account.

When you use more than one provider on the same number, you control which provider sees which messages. Meta's Conversation Routing page explains: "Conversation Routing solves this by assigning each inbound message to a single responder based on the message's entry point." You configure which responder is the primary for each entry point in Meta Business Suite, and the platform delivers the message only to that responder.

You can run Whatsable alongside another provider on the same number. Whatsable only gets a chat's messages when you set it as the primary responder for that entry point.

Templates and billing

Your Whatsable templates live in the messaging account that belongs to Whatsable. Other providers on the same number keep their own templates.

Meta's messaging fees are passed through at 0% markup. Whatsable doesn't add anything on top. Meta charges your own payment method on your messaging account, not Whatsable.

Coexistence with WhatsApp Business App

Whatsable supports WhatsApp Coexistence, so you can keep the WhatsApp Business App on your existing number. Under Meta's new model, connecting turns your existing account into Whatsable's messaging account, and its ID stays the same.

Backward compatibility

According to a Gupshup support article quoting Meta's rollout details, backward compatibility runs through the first half of 2028. Your existing Cloud API endpoints, phone number IDs, template workflows, and billing stay unchanged during that window.

What to do now

Meta's migration was automatic and needed no action, and your Whatsable setup keeps working.

You can switch to Whatsable without moving your number. If you want to automate WhatsApp on the number you already use, Whatsable supports WhatsApp Coexistence, so you can keep the WhatsApp Business App on your existing number. Start with Whatsable or talk to us.
