To switch WhatsApp API provider, first find out how your number is held: on an older WhatsApp Business Account, on Meta's new account model, or through the WhatsApp Business app. Then get the old provider's access fully removed, wait for Meta to update, and reconnect through the new provider's signup.

I set up WhatsApp with businesses every day, and the hardest setups are never the new ones. They are the numbers that already passed through another tool. The old provider says "we disconnected you", the email proves it, and Meta still refuses to let you continue. This guide is the order I work in when that happens.
Why does Meta still block my number after the old provider disconnected it?
Because "disconnected" can mean several things. The provider may have removed its own access while the account it created still sits in your Meta business portfolio, with its verification or partner status unfinished. You then see a message in WhatsApp Manager saying the account is restricted, or that your business must be verified by the solution provider, even though that provider no longer answers.
A restriction like this does not always mean you broke a rule. Read the exact text before you do anything. A policy restriction has its own review path, and nothing in this guide will fix one.
Which route applies to your number?
| Your situation | What Meta allows | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Older WhatsApp Business Account on the Cloud API | Move the number with Embedded Signup | Two-step verification turned off, a verified business, and an approved account |
| New WhatsApp account model | Number migration is not supported | Share the WhatsApp account that owns the number with the new partner |
| Number also used in the WhatsApp Business app | Onboard through a partner that supports the Business app | Business app version 2.24.17 or higher, and the phone with you |
Meta's changelog states the second row plainly: if the destination account does not already own the number, the request is rejected, and disconnecting the number from its current account does not make it available. I explain the split in Meta's new WhatsApp account structure.
How do I switch WhatsApp API provider step by step?
- Keep a copy of what you would lose. Write down your approved templates. Make a backup of the WhatsApp Business app chats if the number is on the app.
- Read the status in Meta. In Business Settings, open the WhatsApp account and check its Partners tab. Then open WhatsApp Manager and read the status of the account and the number.
- Ask the old provider for a written release. Ask them to remove their access and to confirm what they removed, including any verification they started. Keep the email.
- Turn off two-step verification if you are on the Embedded Signup route. Meta requires this. There is no API call for it, so you do it in WhatsApp Manager, or the partner that controls the account does it.
- Clear a dead account only if it is really dead. If the old WhatsApp account has no working number and nobody sends from it, removing it from the portfolio can clear the leftover link. This is what I try last, and it is not a documented Meta procedure. Do not do it on an account that is sending, and expect to lose its templates.
- Wait. Meta says a disconnected number can take up to three minutes to become available. In practice I have seen it take longer after an account was removed, so give it time rather than retrying ten times.
- Connect through the new provider. Start the signup from scratch in a fresh window. If it says the number or business already exists, go back to the portfolio and look for a copy of it. Adding the number under the WhatsApp accounts section of the portfolio, with its verification code, is what cleared that error for me.
- Finish on the phone. For a Business app number, the owner of the number must approve the link on that phone. Keep the app open while it syncs. A teammate cannot do this step from their own device.
- Send a real test. Send one message each way before you tell anyone it works, and only then rebuild your templates and automations.
What do I keep and what do I lose?
On the Embedded Signup route, Meta says your display name, quality rating, messaging limit and Official Business Account status stay with the number. Template quality ratings do not move, so migrated templates start at UNKNOWN.
On the Business app route, you keep using the app, and you can choose to share up to 180 days of chat history with the new provider. Media is more limited: Meta only sends media references for the last 14 days. The details are in Meta's Business app onboarding guide, and you can read how it works day to day in our WhatsApp Coexistence page.
Avoid the shortcut of deleting the WhatsApp account from the phone. Meta confirms that your message history is lost if you go that way.
What should I do after the number connects?
Automations do not move with the number. Every tool that used the old provider's key needs a new one. In Whatsable that key lives in Settings, under API keys, and this short guide shows where to find it. If you run several numbers, label them and decide who sees what before the team starts replying.
If you are moving to Whatsable, you can start the connection here, and the Coexistence route lets you keep the Business app on the same number. If you get stuck on a restriction, the docs and our team can look at it with you.
FAQ
Can I change WhatsApp Business API provider without losing my number?
Yes, in most cases. The number stays yours, but the route depends on the account model. On an older account you move it with Embedded Signup. On Meta's new account model migration is not supported, so you share the account that owns the number with the new partner.
How long does it take to switch WhatsApp provider?
The connection itself takes minutes once nothing blocks it. Meta says a disconnected number can take up to three minutes to free up. A number with a leftover link can take much longer, because you depend on the old provider and on Meta updating.
What does "business must be verified by the solution provider" mean?
Meta is waiting for the provider that created the setup to finish it. If you left that provider, ask them in writing to release the account. Then check the Partners tab in Business Settings to confirm their access is gone.
Do I lose my message history when I switch?
Not automatically. History in the old provider's inbox stays with them unless you export it. A number on the WhatsApp Business app can share up to 180 days with the new provider. Deleting the WhatsApp account from the phone loses the history.
Do I need the phone with the number to switch?
For a WhatsApp Business app number, yes. The approval happens on that phone, in the app. Someone else can do everything else on a computer, and the owner can scan or approve during a quick video call.
