WhatsApp Business app AI that pauses when you reply

Most WhatsApp AI tools make you give up the Business app. WhatsAble uses Meta Coexistence: keep the app, keep your number, add AI that pauses when you reply.

WhatsApp Business app AI that pauses when you reply

Most WhatsApp AI tools make you give up the Business app on your phone. There is a different path.

The thing nobody tells you about adding AI to WhatsApp is that most tools make you choose. Give up the Business app on your phone, or keep the app and live without automation.

That is not a rule. It is a limitation of how most WhatsApp API tools are built. There is a different path.

The problem most business owners run into

You use WhatsApp Business app every day. Customers message you there, your team replies, and the conversation history goes back months. You want an AI to answer when you are busy, follow up with leads who have gone quiet, and handle the questions that come in at 11pm.

The moment you start researching "WhatsApp AI chatbot", you hit a wall: nearly every tool requires you to move to the WhatsApp Cloud API. And moving to the API means giving up the Business app on your phone.

Some tools document this clearly. Fonio, for example, says in their help article on WhatsApp account types: "fonio connects exclusively to the API. If you already use the WhatsApp Business App, you need a separate number for fonio -- your existing app number cannot be used unless you permanently migrate it away from the app." Their quick-reference table shows Business App as No.

That is not a knock on fonio. It is how the API works for most providers. The WhatsApp Cloud API and the Business app are two separate systems. They do not share the same connection. If you want both on the same number, you need a provider that has built on top of Meta's Coexistence feature.

What Meta Coexistence actually is

Meta built an official bridge between the Cloud API and the Business app. It is called Coexistence. It lets both systems run on the same number at the same time.

When you connect WhatsAble, you go through Embedded Signup. Meta's Coexistence handshake runs. After that, your Business app keeps working exactly as before. Messages you send from the phone appear in the WhatsAble shared inbox. Messages your AI sends appear in the app. Everything stays in sync.

One thing to know before you connect: at the moment of setup, Meta pulls around the last six months of your 1:1 conversation history into WhatsAble. Not everything -- groups, calls, and Status stay on the phone app only. But the recent 1:1 context your team needs day one is there.

Do not uninstall the Business app after connecting. The Coexistence link depends on it staying installed. Leave it on your phone.

How the AI pause works natively

Every conversation in WhatsAble has a Chat Handoff toggle: AI Assistant or Human Agent.

Native Chat Handoff: when anyone on your team replies manually -- in the WhatsAble inbox or from the WhatsApp Business app on the phone -- the conversation flips to Human Agent and the native AI stops on that chat. You can also set Human Agent by hand. When someone sets AI Assistant again, the native AI can reply on that chat.

Separately: if you run Make, Zapier, or n8n, phone replies also fire the outgoing webhook (was_message_by_human true, send_by "WhatsApp App"). Build a filter there to pause those automations. That filter is not Chat Handoff.

ProactiveBot: what it is and who can use it

If a conversation has been quiet for a while and you want the AI to follow up automatically, that is ProactiveBot.

ProactiveBot is available on Pro and Agency plans. It is not on the Bulk Message plan. You configure three things: how many follow-ups to send, the time window for sending them, and the minimum silence before the bot assesses whether to reach out.

The bot can create or edit conversation labels, and if no follow-up template exists yet, it can generate one.

Connecting WhatsAble: what actually happens

Here is what the setup looks like end to end:

  1. In the WhatsAble console, go to Settings and start the WhatsApp connection through Embedded Signup. This is Meta's official onboarding flow.
  2. You will scan a QR code with your WhatsApp Business app on your phone to confirm the number.
  3. Meta's Coexistence handshake runs in the background. Keep the Business app installed on your phone going forward.
  4. You will see a history sync prompt. Confirm it. Around six months of 1:1 conversations appear in your shared inbox.

That is the connect. Your phone works the same way it did before. The shared inbox and AI layer are now on top.

One pause scenario, start to finish

A customer messages asking about pricing. Your AI replies with the pricing breakdown from your knowledge base.

The customer asks a follow-up that is outside the AI's configured scope. Your colleague sees the conversation in the shared inbox and types a reply. The Chat Handoff toggles automatically to Human Agent. The AI stops.

Your colleague sends two more messages and closes the conversation. They flip the Chat Handoff back to AI Assistant. The AI is ready for the next message from that contact.

Nothing was configured for this specific scenario. It worked because the platform tracked the manual reply and updated the conversation mode.

Where to go next
