You want AI and automation on WhatsApp without giving up the Business app on your phone. Here is where the two tools land on that question.
Most people asking this question already have WhatsApp Business app on their phone. They reply to customers there every day. They want AI replies, automation, and a shared inbox on top of that, not instead of it.
That is the coexistence question. WhatsAble runs on Meta's official Coexistence feature: your existing number, your existing Business app, and a full automation layer on top. When a teammate replies in the WhatsAble inbox or from the WhatsApp Business app on the phone, native Chat Handoff flips to Human Agent and the AI stops on that conversation. Separately, if you run Make, Zapier, or n8n, pause those automations with a webhook filter on was_message_by_human / send_by -- that filter is not Chat Handoff. No migration. No lost chat history.
Fonio requires a different setup. Their own help docs explain it clearly: they connect exclusively to the WhatsApp Cloud API. If you are already using the Business app, you need to permanently migrate your number off it before you can use fonio with that number.
Every Fonio row in this table is sourced from fonio's own public help and pricing pages. WhatsAble rows reflect live product features. No invented claims on either side.

WhatsAble runs on Meta's official Coexistence feature. You connect your existing WhatsApp number through Embedded Signup. The Business app stays active. Messages sync both ways in real time between your phone and the shared inbox.
When you connect, around six months of 1:1 conversation history comes over so your team has context from day one. Groups, calls, and Status stay on the phone app. They are not synced into the WhatsAble inbox.
When a teammate replies in the WhatsAble inbox or from the WhatsApp Business app on the phone, the AI stops on that conversation. The Chat Handoff toggle switches from AI Assistant to Human Agent. You can also set Human Agent by hand. If you also run Make, Zapier, or n8n automations, filter on was_message_by_human / send_by in the outgoing webhook to pause those too. That filter is a separate mechanism from native Chat Handoff.
Do not uninstall the Business app after connecting. Uninstalling it breaks the Coexistence link.
Fonio is an AI phone and WhatsApp platform built for businesses starting fresh or already on the WhatsApp Cloud API. It handles AI phone calls, WhatsApp chatbots, scheduling, and a unified inbox. It is a real product.
On the coexistence question, their help article at fonio.info/articles/whatsapp/account-types is unambiguous: "fonio connects exclusively to the API. If you already use the WhatsApp Business App, you need a separate number for fonio." And: "You cannot open WhatsApp on your mobile and reply to customer messages there."
Their article also explains what migration means: "Migrating a number from the Business App to the API permanently deregisters it from the app. You would lose access to your chat history and the number would move fully to the API."
This page does not invent coexistence support for fonio. If your evaluation depends on keeping the Business app on the same number, the source is above.

No. WhatsAble uses Meta Coexistence. You keep the app running. Uninstalling it after connecting would break the Coexistence link, so leave it installed.
No. Fonio's own help docs state they connect exclusively to the WhatsApp Cloud API and that the Business App is not supported. Their quick-reference table on the account types page shows Business App as No.
Around six months of 1:1 conversation history syncs into WhatsAble at connect. Groups, calls, and Status stay on the phone app and do not appear in the WhatsAble inbox.
When you reply from the WhatsApp Business app on your phone, WhatsAble's outgoing webhook fires with was_message_by_human: true and send_by: "WhatsApp App". The native AI chatbot toggle (Chat Handoff) also switches to Human Agent when any teammate replies. These are two separate mechanisms. You can filter on the webhook fields to pause Make or Zapier automations independently.
WhatsAble bills by unique contacts with no Meta markup on messaging. Fonio's WhatsApp plans bill by conversations per month: Solo starts at €79/month for 800 conversations, Team at €249/month for 2,500 conversations, Scale from €449/month for 4,500 and above. These Fonio figures come from fonio.ai/en/pricing/ sourced on 2026-08-23. Check their live page for current rates.
WhatsAble's coexistence hub explains Meta's Coexistence feature in full: how the connect works, what history syncs, what stays on the phone app, and how throughput limits are set by Meta. It is a useful read before or after this compare.
